There are a lot of games that were originally made for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and then had sequels released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Most of these games were pretty much the same as the original (Metroid, Tetris, any board game); some were much worse than the original game (Super Castlevania IV) and a few were better (Super Punch Out, Mario, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.) So what was the difference for many of theses? What made some changes terrible and others great? The same thing that screws things up in every other new system release, sometimes game developers focus on game play (like they always should) and sometimes they like to show off the new graphics for the new system, which happens more and more with new systems as rookie developers tend to focus on graphics at the expense of gameplay.
The change from 8 bit glory to the new age of 16 bit had a lot of game developers excited. In the rush to put out the new style they rehashed an old game. There is no advantages to Super Metroid except it now takes longer when you get lost. Oh yeah!
However, games like punch out make the best snes games because the game play got better, the graphics improved greatly, and you actually enjoyed playing the game all the way through instead of pretending that you do because you did the last ten versions. Just because you beat the first Final Fantasy when it was the final fantasy doesn’t mean you have to play ten more. That means you too Mega Man 983.
If you’re feeling nostalgic, but can’t go way back (either the controllers cause you blisters or you now have aesthma and can’t blow on your NES original cartridge to get it going) bust out the super punch out and have a great evening.
