While the symptoms of menopause vary among women, there some very commonly occurring symptoms. Hot flashes are the most common and well known of all menopausal symptoms, and as many as 75% of all women have hot flashes during the years before menopause; however, the symptoms usually tend to diminish in intensity two years following the onset of menopause. As many as 50% of women have hot flashes for many years following the onset of menopause, but the intensity and frequency of the hot flashes tend to diminish with time, making them easier to tolerate. Most women consider hot flashes to be an annoyance; however, around 10% of women experience symptoms so acute, they seek medical intervention. Women who have suffered from breast cancer have an increased risk of experiencing acute symptoms, according to some evidence, and may be some of those who seek medical help.
