What type of filing cabinet you buy will largely determined on it’s use and wear you choose to use it. The two most common types of file cabinets are lateral and vertical filing cabinets. Here I will go over these filing cabinets and their best use.
Lateral Filing Cabinets
Lateral file cabinets are most popular in the US due to their paper sizes. The front of the drawer stretches across the long face of the file cabinet. It can store 2 rows of paper side by side or one row long ways across the drawer. The most common type found is the 4 drawer filing cabinet although 2 drawer models are also common. If you need a little extra storage, a 5 drawer model can be purchased (but you will need to be quite tall).
Vertical Filing Cabinets
The vertical file cabinet keeps one row of files per drawer. The drawers front onto one of the shorter faces of the cabinet, this makes it great if you have a scarce amount of wall space in your home or office. A 2 drawer version works perfectly for a small amount of storage in any home office.
