An introduction to transplanting large trees

The modern-day world is quite full of things that move fast, we also want our lives to move faster because there is never enough time in the day. This need for achieving something yesterday has moved its way into our homes, and in this particular case into our backyards. There are many more people nowadays who once they have built a new home will want to have the weathered look straight away. This means also that not only did they want a fully landscaped garden that looks like it’s been there forever, they also want the convenience of having a large tree transplanted to make it look like it has been growing there forever.

So, what are the ins and outs of transplanting a tree? One of the questions that we are asked very often here at Forest Ireland is how long it would take to move a mature tree. Although it is quite possible to move a mature tree is very unlikely that any company is going to undertake the transplantation. There are several reasons for this, most of them involve logistics, but the main reason is that once the tree reaches its full maturity it is highly unsuitable for transplantation, the fact is that the chances of a successful transplantation are very slim once a tree has been established that long.

So, most of the time the trees that are being transplanted are known as semi-mature or instant trees. If you think about the fact that the largest trees that we move in Irish Forestry are going to be up 10 tones in weight, you know that it’s going to be a long and a complicated process. Also, when talking about size, trees that are over 15 meters high and going to be much more difficult to move and there are very few companies who will want to attempt to move a tree that is the big, in fact there are very few companies that have the means to do this. Forestry in Clare does not really have the need to transplanted trees that are this big. A lot of this is to do with the costs that would be involved.
