Designing Your Décor from the Bottom Up

Any interior designer worth their salt will tell you that the most important step in designing your home is the planning stage. You need to put most of your effort into deciding exactly what you want your home to look like, long before you make any purchases. So many times I have seen people move into a new home and then try and design it around their existing furniture and knick knacks. You end up with a real mess, as you’ve not put any thought into the actual house that you are trying to decorate.

Say for example you have moved into a traditional homestead style house, and you have bought along honeycomb window blinds from your old studio apartment. Many people will try and cut costs by installing these blinds, in a house that is really not suited for them. Then, it has the flow on effect of needing furniture and paint schemes to match your blinds, and you end up spending a heap of money to get your home to match the blinds. This is entirely the wrong way to go about designing a home decor. You would be much better off assuming that you have no furniture to begin with, and if something you own does happen to fit into your plan, then all the better.
