Common Stretch Mark Myths Explored

Stretch marks are “stripes” or marks under the skin, reddish when newly formed, white after enough time has passed, often associated with women after pregnancy. It is a topic where myths abound, this article will attempt to explore some of them.

Myth: Old Stretch Marks can not be Treated

This is only partially true. Topical creams are a popular treatment option for stretch marks. These creams are, indeed, only effective within six weeks of the marks forming, when they are still red, pink or purple.

However, treatments that will improve the appearance of the stretch marks even when they are old and white exist. The most popular option is laser treatment. The laser is able to stimulate collagen growth that will, hopefully, fill up the stretch marks.

Myth: Stretch Marks are Caused by the Skin Breaking due to Stretching

This one is controversial. Since stretch marks are known to happen in periods where the skin is forced to rapidly stretch, such as during pregnancy and puberty, it is the common wisdom that the epidermis breaks due to the stress.

However, new research points towards the cause of stretch marks being hormonal imbalance. This imbalance simply happens to take place in periods also associated with weight change. Again, both pregnancy and puberty is well known to be associated with drastic hormonal changes.

Myth: Stretch Marks only Affect Women

This is definitely not true. Stretch marks in men is common, there is nothing in the condition that should make it exclusively a problem for women. This myth is probably a result of stretch marks being so closely associated with pregnancy.

Men with stretch marks therefore has nothing to feel embarrassed about and are not alone. If  you are a man affected by stretch marks and you feel it affects you, you can seek treatment just as you would with any other condition!
