Microwave ovens are standard in any kitchen because of their ability to heat up food much more quickly and efficiently than a standard oven. But their weakness has always been their inability to brown or crisp in the way that an oven does. Convection microwaves give you the best of both worlds the speed and convenience of a microwave, with the browning capability of a standard oven.
Before you decide to purchase a single serve rice cooker you should make sure that this size of machine will meet your requirements. A 3 cup device is perfect for those of you who live on your own or even if you live together with your partner. In fact, this size of appliance can make enough rice for five people. However there will not be an option to keep left overs. This is why I suggest that if you have more than a three person family then you might be better off choosing the next size up which is a 5 1/2 cup model. Just to be clear, there are three sizes of rice cooker. The smallest is the single serve version, 3 cups. Then there is the family sized 5 1/2 cup cooker. Finally, if you have a very large family or regularly cook for guests then you may want to think about a 10 cup unit.
When you purchase a breakfast nook set, sometimes it will come with accessories or extras. An example of one such accessory is the lazy susan. A lazy susan is a flat surface that spins around. It is usually placed in the middle of a table so that people can reach items no matter where they are sitting. You can store things like napkins or the salt and pepper here so that they are accessible to everyone. If you lazy susan is large enough, you can even set the bowls and serving trays of food on it so that everyone can serve themselves easily. Another common breakfast nook accessory is hooks or storage compartments on the end of benches. If you have high back benches then the ends of these high backs offer a great opportunity for extra storage. You can install hooks or a magazine rack here so that there is a place for a man to hang his hat or put the newspaper when it is time to eat. If you are interested in any of these accessories you can usually install them yourself if they do not come standard.
The kitchen island is generally in the center of the kitchen and therefore directly below the main kitchen lighting fixture. But, kitchen island lighting does not have to be so boring. Many kitchens use track lighting or spot lights to light the entire space and in these cases, you can point spots toward the island as well. Spot lighting can be a particular help when you have something hanging above your island like a pot rack. Obviously you will not be able to light the kitchen or even just the island with an overhead light fixture because the pots and pans would block the light. So, you will need to point spot lights toward the kitchen island surface so that it is not shadowed a dark. I have also seen people have small table lamps sitting on their kitchen island if they just want to turn on a small light as they enter the kitchen at night. Be careful with these types of lights, though. If there is a cord exposed and water gets on it or near it you could have an electrical accident.
